Kodachrome 25 Tomatos Grandpa's Garden Boro Park 1976

Several years ago, when I was still a newbie gardner with ideas of growing grandeur, I agreed to share a garden with my neighbors. We plotted out about 15 rows in the space between our homes. For several weekends we shopped for plants at local garden centers. On one of these shopping trips I came across a variety of cherry tomato called sweet 100′s. The identification tag showed a picture of a beautiful bushy plant with clusters of bite sized red tomatoes. It was early spring in central Florida. In a haze of excited anticipation I bought two flats nine for me and nine for the neighbors. Small as they were, I reasoned, we would need that many to make it worth our while. As the days and months passed we were excited as the yellow flowers that announce the coming of a tomato began to pop out. Day after day the yellow flowers bloomed until finally one day there were little green tomatoes. Then little red tomatoes. Lots and lots of little red tomatoes. We picked and ate and picked and ate. We shared with our neighbors until they begged us to stop. Eventually we ignored the tomatoes and left them to the birds agreeing that once winter killed this crop we would scale down our tomato section. Still the little yellow blooms came and the plants became a massive wall of little red balls. The vigorous little buggers engulfed our garden overwhelming summer squash and banana peppers even the watermelon was unable to fight off the force it had become. Finally the days began to shorten and our garden began to brown we pulled all the plants and put them on the mulch pile glad to see the obnoxious beasts gone. Our joy turned to dismay 3 months later in November when we noticed a frighteningly familiar leaf began to dot our landscape. Believe it or not These crazy plants seeded themselves from the bird droppings and grew right through winter. No, not in my yard, I pulled them up, but in my neighbors on the other side. In fact for years later we would find these hardy little bushes growing throughout the neighborhood. I still laugh when I see those harmless looking sweet 100 trays beckoning to newbies ready to live off the land. But I am NEVER ever tempted to buy them.

Vegetable Gardens: Grow your own veg

Tomatoes: A good variety is a cherry tomato Gardeners Delight.’ A tip for getting them started early is to put a propagator in the airing cupboard in February. When they are about 3″/7 cms high pot them out into the greenhouse. When they are established pinch out the side shoots to maintain a good plant. They will need supporting after a while. I stretch wire across the greenhouse, and suspend string and tie it around the base of the tomato, and wrap the plant around the string as it grows. Feed when the fruit start to emerge.

I am going to include fruit. Raspberries are a good fruit to grow, but I protect them from the birds with netting, and need supporting. Place stakes at either end of the row of plants. They will need to be in deep, as there will be lot of weight to support, and attach three wires at different levels to tie the plants into. They also freeze well.

Potatoes: A number of varieties are available, earlies, second earlies and summer. I chit (sprout) the potatoes in a dark cupboard to prevent them photsynthesising and go green. When the sprouts have developed plant them out into some well-rotted manure and earth up the plants. Again, this prevents them going green which makes them poisonous.

Runner beans: Plant seeds in pots in propagator, or on a window ledge in a sunny spot. A rule of thumb regarding the depth to plant seeds is to have them at a depth of their size. Thus, runner beans would be planted deeper than a tomato seed. I build a teepee like construction, but with bamboo canes in a straight line with one cane running along the top for stability. Plant out when the plants have reached a good size. This also helps help prevent them from being eaten by the perennial problem of slugs and snails. A lot of people use slug pellets, but I do not like doing this. Try and find an alternative method. Try putting grit around the plants, as they do not like travelling across it. I believe beer in yoghurt pots works.

Compost bins: A minimum of three, two for horse manure, and the third for kitchen scraps. If you can also have one for grass cuttings, even better.

Double digging: This makes good soil drainage. Dig a trench two spade spits deep at one end of the plot. Then work your way along transferring soil.

PH test: Ph kits can be purchased in a garden centre. They measure whether soil is alkaline or acidic, on a scale of 1 14. Instructions on the kit will tell you what the ph is by the colour that the liquid changes to. Lime loving plants are called calcicoles; whereas lime-hating plants are calcifuges, literally lime fire. This will indicate what will and will not grow, and is best used in conjunction with a book on horticulture.

Introducing a three year old to Cherry Tomatoes

I had my great niece and nephew over after school, my husband and I watch them till their mother picks them up after work. I made salad to go with dinner. The kids can be rather picky about what they eat so I usually feed them macaroni and cheese or hot dogs. My great niece, who was sitting in her high chair, stopped eating and just stared at me. I had a cherry tomato on the end of my fork half way to my mouth when she yelled “what that?” I looked down at my salad then at the fork, ” Oh this, it’s a cherry tomato.” She reached out, stretching towards the table “I want one.” She whined. I sighed, ” its not candy sweetie, you might not like it.” “I want mato”, she yelled. I grabbed one from my salad and dropped it right in the middle of her macaroni and cheese. She giggled, picked it up and popped it into her mouth. While chewing she started to giggle again “hmmmato” came out of her mouth along with tomato seed drool. I burst out laughing, the sound of “gross!” followed by a loud chuckle came from the other end of the table where my husband sat. Our great nephew (Tyrell) joined in and we all had a good laugh. When their mother came to pick them up, I leaned down to give my great niece (Shy Anne) a hug, ” after school tomorrow I ll show you the cherry tomato plants in the garden out back, OK?” she smiled at me, “OK”. Well after school the next day the kids rushed into the house, throwing their book bags on the couch. First thing out of my great niece’s mouth “matos?” So through the house and out the back door we marched, with a stop at the dinner table for a saltshaker. Standing on the back porch the two of them pointed at the shaker, “what that for?” smiling as I made my way down the back steps, I called over my shoulder, ” you’ll see”. We made our way through the garden to the tomato plants. I knelt down in front of the cherry tomato and picked a rather large one off, wiped it on my shirt, salted it and popped it in my mouth “mmmmm!” They both started yelling “my turn,my turn!” Handing the saltshaker to Shy Anne, ” You first”. Tyrell folded his arms over his chest and plopped down in the dirt with a pout on his face. “What are you all sad about?” I asked,”I want mato” he said as one little tear rolled down his cheek. “Your so silly” I said ruffling his curly hair. I pulled a cherry tomato off the bush for him, “here, wipe it on your shirt before you eat, there might be dirt on it.” He was all smiles again. The next day Shy Anne grabbed the saltshaker all on her own and headed out the back door. I followed slowly behind her, as I stepped out on the back porch and looked across the yard, there she sat in the dirt salt in one hand, cherry tomato in the other and to my surprise she already had one in her mouth, which she was happily chewing. I yelled out to her, ” don’t eat to many dinners in a half hour” She smiled at me and waved. I just chuckled and went back in the house.
