seeds from seven different tomato varieties

One of the greatest advantages of growing tomatoes from seed is that it affords the gardener the opportunity to grow a far greater variety of tomatoes than they could otherwise grow. It also enables the gardener to grow heirloom varieties that aren’t traditionally available in garden centers. If you plan to grow your tomatoes in containers, be sure to check out “Container Seeds.

When considering seeds, you need to know that a tomato variety that is determinate is one that will produce a large crop at one time, and will not produce much if anything after the large crop. Indeterminate varieties are those that produce an even supply of tomatoes throughout the growing season.

Determinate varieties may be a better choice for people in very warm climates. If night time low temperatures don’t go below 70 degrees, even though a plant may have many flowers on its branches, those flowers may not yield actual fruits.

When planning to start your tomato plants from seeds, it is vital that you do so ten weeks before you plan to plant them in the ground. The reason I recommend ten weeks is because that gives you eight weeks during which the seeds will sprout and grow, and you have an extra week if some of the seeds are slower to germinate. The tenth week will be used for hardening off the plants prior to planting them in pots outdoors or in the ground.

To harden the plants off, simply take the flats outside during the day and bring them back inside at night. If the seeds germinate quickly and the plants have reached a decent size by week nine, then you can use that week to keep them outdoors during the day and bring them in at night. The following week, you can leave them outside all the time, and that may keep them from suffering from “transplant shock when you do plant them in the ground or in pots.

To grow your own tomato plants from seed, you will need your seeds of course. You will also need containers to plant in. I prefer to use peat pellets because they are completely self contained. You simply soak the pellets in warm water and they expand. Once they have expanded, they look like a little sack that is filled with peat moss or dirt.

Peat pots are also very useful, but they can be more expensive. They are made of compressed peat moss and will decompose in the ground or in the pot. They add organic matter to the soil while adding a substance that will help allow

grateful but grossed out

Before I became interested in agraculture and gardening, I was quite a grumpy and short tempered fellow. I snapped at whatever other people said and didn’t take joking well. I tended to become bored at whatever I did, and that resulted in both frustration and irritation.

One day, while I was watching TV, a friend of mine came up to me. He saw what I was doing and instantly said “, Dude, you gotta find something else to do.” I thought about it for awhile, before getting fussy and leaving the room.

Late that night, as I was falling asleep, my mind began to wonder. I began to wonder about what my friend had said earlier. What could I possibly do that would interest me? Sports? Nah, I had always been a more academic than athletic person. Collecting? No, it would end up costing more than it was worth. I decided to set the subject of some kind of hobby aside and leave it to brood on later.

A couple weeks later, I found myself going outside to check the mail-something I didn’t exactly do often. I looked through the mail to see what I had got. A couple letters from some friends, a bunch of letters from various companies, a National Geographic magazine, and-hmm? What’s this? A gardening magazine? I didn’t remember subscribing to any of these before. I decided to take a look at it back in the comfort of my home.

“Tomato seeds, sunflower seeds, compost makers…” I though to myself as I looked through the magazine. There were so many different kinds of plants that I had never knew about. Who knew there were so many different kinds of tomatoes? Definitely not me. I decided to try order one of their starter kits and begin a little garden of my own.

Two weeks later, I recieved the things I ordered. The starter kit, which included some pots, peat pellets(which expand with water), and some tomato & radish seeds. I was quite excited and began planting the seeds right away.

For almost a week, I watered my little seeds every day, untill one day, I saw it beginning to sprout. I was so happy; I felt a feeling of accomplishment just then and I must say, I quite liked it.

For another two weeks, I watered them and took care of them. They grew quite big, and, just like what the instructions in the kit said, I carefully took them out of their pots and put them into the ground. Soon, the radishes looked big enough to harvest, and the tomato plants were producing fruit. I picked them, with a great feeling of accomplishment all the while, and took them into the house.

I didn’t notice that while I was taking care of my plants outside, I was becoming a more patient and cheerful person. However, I didn’t notice untill one day, my friend (the same one from before) mentioned it to me.

“Gosh, you sure have changed a lot since I last saw you.” he said.

“Huh? what do you mean?” I replied.

“Well, for one, you are much more patient then before and a lot less grumpy.”

“Is that so?” I said, thinking back on recent events after they last met. “Well, I wonder why.”

That was when I first found out that gardening had made me into a changed person, in a good way. And I also found it fun. I only noticed then that gardening was the hobby for me. I finally understood what my friend had said, more than a month ago. Satisfied, I decided to stick with gardening and it has made me who I am today.
