Yes you can grow tomatoes upside down. I know that it seems strange but it is a very neat way for a person with a small backyard or poor soil to grow tomatoes. In fact you will get better tomatoes because the critters can’t get to them and they are more disease resistant. The really good news is you don’t have to spend twenty dollars on a special kit to do this. You can create your own upside down garden with a few cheap and simple items.
First get yourself some five gallon buckets with lids. I use cheap white ones making sure that the lids fit tight. You can buy them at almost any hardware store cheap. Now cut a two inch diameter hold in the bottom of the bucket. A drill bit will make this job easier. Now take a coffee filter or scrap of fabric and cover the hole. This is so the soil will not fall out. Fill you bucket with a light weight soil making sure to shake the bucket from time to time so that the soil will settle. Now put your lid on and turn your bucket upside down. Cut a slit into the coffee filter or fabric scrap. And plant your tomatoes seedling making sure to have two inches of coverage on the plant so it will be stable. Now carefully carry your bucket to where you will hang it. Making sure that the seedling does not touch the ground or it might break off. Now hang you bucket in a sunny location and make sure it is well watered for the next few weeks. There you have it. A cheap and very cool way to grow tomatoes that will have all you neighbors asking how did you do that. So sit back and enjoy, because as I have found my upside down tomato plants produce more tomatoes and are healthier then any that I have ever grow-en in the ground. One quick tip. To make watering easier you can just rest the lids on the top. But you will have to watch the soil level with the lids not on tight the wind might blow some out so just make sure that you keep it full. So just check it from week to week and add just fill if you notice it getting lower. And water water water. The roots will dry out faster then if it were in the ground. It is that way with every potted plant upside down or right side up.
